Masters Internship and Doctoral Practicum

Overview

The Michigan State University Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) offers training to graduate students in counseling, social work, and related mental health programs. Commitments and arrangements are made on a case-by-case basis.  The following characteristics of our program make this training experience unique:

• College Student Development:  The purpose of our services is to help all students succeed by facilitating health and wellness. We provide services within an integrated health care model and support the academic mission of the university.
• Multicultural Competence: CAPS provides services to a diverse population. An important goal of the training program is to help trainees acquire cultural awareness, knowledge, and skills within a diverse university community.
• Psychotherapy Integration: CAPS provides multi-theoretical clinical perspectives. Trainees are taught to combine ideas and strategies from several different theories of psychotherapy based on the needs of individual clients.

Training Model

The CAPS Training Program embraces a philosophy of experiential learning and training that emphasizes practical experience and clinical supervision. As a result of completing this internship, you will display awareness, knowledge, and skills related to individual treatment, outreach, and group psychotherapy. Attention to professional development, ethical conduct, and multicultural competence is infused throughout training.
