Food insecurity is a growing reality for many, and Michigan State University is taking meaningful action to address access on campus.
On September 15, 2025, University Health and Wellbeing staff opened the doors to Spartan Shelf-Union. As the MSU Food Bank and Basic Needs Program's second distribution site, this location expands access to free, nutritious food for Spartans.
A second location offers Spartans more than convenience. The new site creates autonomy, dignity, and belonging. Spartan Shelf-Union features expanded hours, a self-shop model, and a section tailored to diverse dietary needs, including gluten-free, halal, kosher, and other options. Here, Spartans can walk in and feel seen, supported, and empowered to care for their basic needs without shame. Spartans will also have more accessible hours and an ideal location in the MSU Union’s hub of activity and campus connection.
The original food bank location at Olin Health Center remains open. Together, both sites will allow MSU to meet rising demand. In 2024 alone, nearly 17,000 participants accessed the MSU Food Bank and Basic Needs Program. With this expansion, that number is expected to grow significantly.
This effort was made possible through generous donor contributions, in-kind support, and campus partnerships. Spartan Shelf-Union is a shining example of what can happen when a community comes together to serve one another with passion, belonging, and collaboration.
Spartan Shelf-Union is open in Room 25 of the MSU Union on the garden level during the following hours:
- Tuesdays, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
An appointment is needed to shop at the new location. Schedule an appointment with Spartan Shelf-Union at PantrySoft. An order can also be placed through Spartan Shelf-Olin at the same link.
The new food bank location serves as a reminder that building a healthier, more equitable MSU is a shared responsibility. Wellbeing extends beyond individual programs and departments and is made possible through collective, collaborative action.
