Active Workplace Award

 

The UHW Active Workplace Award is a one-time funding opportunity designed to help units and departments at MSU promote wellness by providing fitness equipment (walking pad/desk cycle) for employee use. Through this program, departments can obtain equipment that supports physical activity and reduces sedentary behavior in the workplace. The goal is to make it easier for employees to move throughout the day.   

Why Participate?   

According to the 2024 UHW Assessment, 75% of MSU employees say their workdays involve prolonged sitting. Providing movement tools shows the University’s commitment to employee well-being. Research indicates that active, visible leadership from supervisors is key to successful workplace health initiatives. Participation may help improve employee:  

  • Physical Health – Boosts fitness, posture, and overall well-being 
  • Mental Health – Reduces stress, improves mood, and sharpens focus 
  • Sedentary Behavior – Encourages movement and lowers health risks  

 

Award Process   

  • How to Apply: Units wishing to apply will need to submit an application during the annual funding cycle. Applications are accepted for four weeks, beginning in the fall. Program implementation for awardees will begin in the spring semester following application.   
  • Award Amount: Applicants will receive $1,000 in funding. 
  • Consultation/Ongoing Support: UHW’s Health Promotion team will provide consultation, guidance, and support for awardees. Units considering applying for the award may request an initial consultation with UHW Health Promotion staff to discuss their application before submitting.   

 

Award Requirements 

  • Funding to be used to purchase one walking pad and one desk cycle 
  • Participation in UHW data collection efforts 
  • Unit will provide a designated ‘contact person’ to help oversee the program within the unit  
  • An appropriate space for the equipment must be provided 
  • Commitment to safety best practices, including staff training as needed  
  • Agreement to regularly maintain equipment  
  • Plan for equipment longevity, including financial plan for maintenance, replacement parts
